While fishermen ply remote seas for weeks at a time, their families wait anxiously for their safe return. As one fisherman says, "I never leave home without saying goodbye, because if you lose your life at sea, for your mother it wouldn't be nice that she didn't get to say goodbye." Against the stunning backdrop of Urk and the tempestuous North Sea, amazingly candid first-person reflections are woven into a beautiful tapestry of pride, faith, resignation—and loss. With rare and remarkable cinematography, Urk, the first full-length documentary about the town of the same name, captures a community on the brink of change. High-tech computers plot ships' courses in the treacherous North Sea and track bidding in the fish auction on Urk. At the same time, centuries-old practices persist: The ships shut down at sea for the Sabbath. Fishermen wear the elaborate gold earring that identifies them as being from Urk. Sounds of the Fisher Choir still stir the soul; but so does the blare of pop music. The struggle to maintain traditions is fought against increased mechanization, catch restrictions, foreign competition, and uncontrollable natural forces. The life of a fisherman is hard and dangerous, yet many Urkers cannot imagine doing anything else. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT In September 1997, I went on the North Sea for the first time on the Urk fishing vessel -De Hoop (The Hope). On the second night of the voyage, another Urk fishing vessel sank in the dangerous German Gulf. Kees Korf, a 19-year-old fisherman, drowned. With forty other ships from Urk, we joined in the search for Kees. He was never found. I returned to Urk periodically over the next few years to follow up on this incident, and to tell the whole story of the people of Urk, whose lives are bound to the unforgiving sea. I am an American citizen living in New York, but my father is from the Netherlands, and my cousin is an Urk fisherman. These family connections allowed me a high degree of privileged access to this otherwise closed community. To the best of my knowledge, it is the most intimate and complete film ever made about this unique town. DIRECTOR’S BIOGRAPHY Andrew Berends (Brooklyn, NY) focuses on the art of storytelling in documentary film, narrative film, and photography. His most recent documentary feature URK, a 2003 International Documentary Association - Pare Lorentz Award nominee, tells the story of a small fishing community in the Netherlands challenged by the drowning of a 19-year-old fisherman on the North Sea. Urk is a community that struggles to maintain its traditions in the face of environmental restrictions, the current trends of global economics, and the physical dangers inherent to the fishing occupation. URK is being distributed by LifeSize Entertainment & Releasing. Berends began his film studies at Connecticut’s Wesleyan University where he graduated in 1994. He developed his documentary skills by shooting and editing a variety of ethnographic research projects in New York and across the United States. In 2002 Berends filmed a research documentary for the Child Support Enforcement Agency of Maryland, in conjunction with a study conducted by New York research firm Insight Research Group. In 2003 he worked as editor on A Well-Furnished Mind, a documentary about David Ogilvy, for the New York based worldwide advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather. Berends’ 1997 short film Janie was featured on the Sundance channel. Berends’ recent photography work includes projects in Brazil ranging from the slums of Salvador and Rio de Janeiro to the timeless fishing techniques still practiced in remote villages in Bahia. In New York, he continually works to document the condition of underprivileged Brooklyn youth in housing projects and on public assistance. Following Cinщma Du Rщel, Berends will travel from Paris to Baghdad, Iraq to begin work on his next documentary film project.
